AI innovation on the shop floor with Fraunhofer IPT and Schneider Digital

CAMStylus: Revolutionary toolpath planning

In collaboration with industry leaders such as Schneider Digital, the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) has developed an innovative solution that redefines the creation of toolpaths for machining tools. With the CAMStylus project, the planning of toolpaths in CAM systems has taken a major leap forward through the use of virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI).

What is CAMStylus?

CAMStylus combines a VR environment with advanced gesture recognition, allowing the user to intuitively draw toolpaths with a tracking pen. The system uses AI-powered algorithms to translate these gestures into precise CAM parameters, significantly reducing the complexity and time required for CAM programming.

How it works:

A stereo display provides real-time feedback for gesture inputs. – The AI processes the captured gestures and converts them into voxel representations. – These are used to calculate accurate toolpaths for simulation and execution.

Key benefits:

  • Simplifies CAM programming by reducing manual parameter adjustments
  • Increases precision and efficiency when generating toolpaths
  • Speeds up the development of machining processes and minimises errors and iterations

This breakthrough has already been successfully tested with real geometries and paves the way for further research and collaboration with industry partners. As a proud technology partner, Schneider Digital has supported this project with its high-performance visualisation solutions.
